I think it's pretty obvious that a good deal of the emotions and ups and downs throughout the book were drawn from Fitzgerald's own life...makes it a little painful at times.

And, as I said, there are no good people. And no happy endings. And, in addition to being somewhat shockingly frank for its time, it also has words and mindsets that are pretty jarring to the modern reader.

But I still liked it.Elizabeth H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09161162407130146871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36092055.post-38187837686153090912009-11-17T23:23:49.970-08:002009-11-17T23:23:49.970-08:00Don't read Clickthing today or you're goin...Don't read Clickthing today or you're going to want to punch MPC. ;-)

What is Tender is the Night about? I know, ...Hemingway gets my vote for most-loathed. I know, I know, he has countless fans who would say I'm an undiscerning idiot who doesn't know genius when she sees it, but I really, really, really dislike him. I can recognize that he has his own distinct style and admire that, but that's as far as I go. I forced myself to read The Old Man and the Sea and A Farewell to Arms, but it was grueling. Most of his main male characters are pompous misogynistic drunks with no redeeming qualities, and most of his women are flat, unrealistic and pathetic.

Oh, sorrry, did I rant?

Fitzgerald also writes about unpleasant people, but he manages to do it so beautifully that I like him in spite of myself.Elizabeth H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09161162407130146871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36092055.post-54009552853030171932009-11-17T10:39:27.549-08:002009-11-17T10:39:27.549-08:001. I guess someone was bound to enjoy Fitzgerald's work. I have to admit that The Great Gatsby was the only book that I have ever in my life well and truly hated.

3. Venting through a character is a time-honored tradition. And on that note, I think I am one of many who wants to read more LFP work.Mike Speeglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08648532407369443335noreply@blogger.com
