This and that

(In the interest of full disclosure, I do own two guitars now: one is a much less expensive but still mighty fine Recording King RO-127--I can't say enough about these guitars for those looking for something a bit better than dirt cheap, but still in the semi easy-to-replace ballpark. This one goes with me anywhere I'd be nervous about taking the Collings. Best bang for the buck out there, in my opinion.)

(Oh, and in the section below, there were two places where I meant to type SG-1 and typed SG-3 instead. You'll see what I mean.)

I liked this post a lot. Horrible parking lot moment! I too struggle with paring down my collection. I'm not a collector either and hate to see good machines go unused. I gave one machine away to a nice kid who wanted it for writing, and that felt great. If I could find homes that good for other ones, I'd give a few of them away too. I've thought about having a giveaway or something on my site, but the thought of shipping a typewriter puts me off.

That keychop story makes me wince inside. Cufflinks -- ugh.

Shipping isn't that bad: both Monda and Olivander have received typers from me that reportedly arrived intact and working. The key is double-boxing, and really stuffing as much packing materials into the available space as possible. Sheets and sheets of bubble-wrap are your friends.

Thank you! Yes, the day was a testament to the serendipitous. I love that Olympia (it balances well with my Lettera 32).

When I give someone a typewriter, my only request is that they promise not to destroy it- and if they pass the machine along, that they pass along that stipulation.

Indeed! Artisans like us do wind up (unwittingly) collecting the trappings of our passions. Living in small spaces helps me keep the accumulations down. It's nice to be able to say you use what you own, and if you can't use it, it's not worth owning.

Oh dear, cufflinks. There was really nothing you could do at that point and I feel your pain.

I've pared down a tad. Well, I've given away one typewriter, but that counts. I did stop buying more for a bit, and for all the reasons everyone else lists - I just hate having idle typewriters under the bed.

Loved this post, gal.
