NaNo Blah Blah #1

Shinied up Olympia SG-1

I tried to get some photos of the newly prettied up SG-1 this weekend, but it's so heavy I hated to drag it outside, and it was spitting rain off and on. I'll have to try again. I did get this one photo, which is more artsy than effective. I still kinda like it. And I won't point out the obvious flaws if you don't....

In other news, I've learned that I can't put the typewriter cover aside for even an instant without this occurring. I don't know if it's exceptionally warm or if they see it as competition or what.

This is what typewriter covers are for, right?

Fortunately, they are utterly uninterested in it while it's actually on the typewriter. I just need to train myself not to toss it on the bed. Gosh knows I'm unlikely to be able to train *them*.

Hit just under 10 pages as of this morning, at about 300 words per page (I'm underestimating that by a bit for word count purposes, however). The plan is to get another three pages in this evening, more if I can since I have to be at work by six-thirty tomorrow and won't have time to write before work.

And, as is typical for this time of the month, I'm very pleased with my story, but already feeling really resentful and bitter toward those who have far more words and who are crowing about it. I won't have any trouble hitting 50k, and the story is going to be decent this year, but as usual, it ticks me off when others are writing twice the daily goal and more, even though that isn't *my* goal. And it ticks me off that it ticks me off. For me, this is more about getting a good headstart on a story at a pace that is faster than usual but not unpleasant, so why should I care how others are using this time? It's irrational. I hate it when I'm irrational.

Just remember: people who write more than you are weirdos who have no life, and people who write less than you are slackers.

Ha! That pretty much sums it up, doesn't it?

5.75 hours of work left before I can go home and continue, and I'm sitting here daydreaming about the smell and sound and feel of my SG-1, which makes me...not a weirdo at all. Really.

They're Siamese cats. They're only doing it to piss you off.

Wow that thing is beautiful! I am so envious of that thing, and no it doesn't make you a weirdo daydreaming about the SG, your not the only one...

Yeah, if it's any consolation, I'm channeling my typer-envy into words. Making my envy work for me, not against me, and all that new-agey lovey-huggy nonsense.

Your cats and machine are gorgeous! And, hey, Nano is supposed to be about having fun. It'll be all right, really. You are not alone. :-)

Those cats are DARNED cute.

I always used to tell myself that the people who have massive word counts in the first few days of Nano are obviously homeschooled teenagers with Nanowrimo as their only November assignment.

It made me feel better.

Except that I've lived with the sort of person who wrote five or six thousand words a day without blinking. And I *was* a homeschooled teenager, partly, albeit one who never would have gotten a NaNo style project as a sole assigment.

In my case, I just can't sit down and write for four hours straight, even if I have that much time. I need thinking time. I'll watch a whole scene play out in my head, then write it down, and then I need some time again to come up with the next part--to watch the movie in my head a coupla times. Two to three thousand words in a day is usually about my limit, no matter how much free time I have. I write in blocks. It isn't laziness, it's just how I function. And logically, it shouldn't tick me off that others function differently. But it does.

Oh, and as for the cats...they're actually very affectionate and friendly and not *entirely* evil. Siamese / Siamese-mixes get kind of a bad rap. They do cause distraction, though: the one on the right (Tam) wants to play constantly when there are no typewriter covers available for snoozing (this is the cat who trained himself to play fetch because he kept bringing me his ball to get me to play, and I kept tossing it away...) and the one on the left (Halvah) likes to shred paper, which is a Bad Thing in a typewriter household.

Then there is the dog, who is a Border Collie-Labrador edition of Odie, but that's another story.

I'm of the understanding that homeschooled kids make up a ginormous percentage of Nano forum activity-- I quite literally meant they are the ones who rack up big page counts right off. It would be a worthwhile assignment for kids no matter where they go to school (could you imagine a public school halting its agenda for all of November to participate? It would be wonderful).

I can only concentrate and write a lot in the morning before 7. Unfortunately, I am not a morning person. The perfect excuse!
