Type Tweet: A Brief Lesson in Driving Grammar

Driving Grammar

Without them, we can't quite be sure if you're starting or stopping or slowing down, or quite where you're going.

Well-put. I'm already instructing the future driver in our house. "Under no circumstance while driving should you ever rely on someone else's ability to read your mind."

And I wonder does the driver ignoring those basic items even know where they are going.

I don't expect most drivers to use signals. I just try to keep enough space between us to react in time.

I do use the old hand signals once in a while. Ninety-nine percent, or more, don't recognize them but it makes them pay attention and wonder what I'm up to.

I'm not sure what the grammatical equivalent would be for those folks who drive for *miles* with their turn signals on without actually changing lanes or turning or anything, so you aren't sure if it's safe to go by them or what. It's kinda like using a period at the end of questions, I guess. Makes you do an irritated double-take.

Driving with turn signals constantly blinking may be the equivalent of writing all in capital letters. It initially gets your attention, but then you're really not sure whether they mean what they are saying.

Ha! That's exactly it--perfect!
